There are many reasons to buy shoes at your local running store rather than online or at a big box store, including more knowledgeable staff and supporting your local running community. But another big problem is the fact that many will accept returns even after you’ve done a few errands in your shoes.

If you don’t have a local store with this policy, it’s good to know that some major brands and online stores will also accept returns of lightly worn shoes. Don’t feel bad to take advantage of this policy. The idea is that you can trust your body to tell you if the shoes are working, rather than stressing out in the store (or at home while you unpack) to find out if you think these shoes will work for you.

Nike allows you to return the shoes, even if they have been worn, within 60 days of purchase:

Whether you’re shopping on Nike.com, in one of the Nike apps, or in a Nike store, we give you 60 days to try your Nike and Converse purchases with the confidence that you can return items (some exceptions apply) for any reason during those 60 days. This includes custom Nike by you sneakers. Even after 60 days, you can still return items if they have not been worn or washed.

streams will accept returns within 90 days, yes, even if you ran in the shoes:

Brooks offers the Run Happy Promise – a promise that you’ll love your gear, and if you don’t, we’ll take it back for 90 days after purchase. Run in, sweat in, indoors, outdoors, in the rain – if it doesn’t perform as it should, kick it back.

Unworn items can be returned for one year from the date of purchase.

Fleet Feet, a chain of operating stores that also has an online store, has a 60 day return policy which does not require the non-wearing of shoes:

If an item you purchased from a Fleet Feet store or from Fleetfeet.com does not make you happy with its performance, appearance or fit, you can return it within 60 days * for a full refund. This is our Happy Fit Guarantee.

With brands or stores not listed here, you might still be able to return them, but runners’ experiences seem to be mixed. For example, Adidas’ return policy doesn’t specifically say that you can return the shoes after using them, but at least a Redditor said adidas customer service told them it would be OK to return the shoes they ran in. (Please note that policies can change and they often vary by country.) If you’ve bought shoes, run in them, and aren’t happy with it, it can’t hurt to ask.
